Yamaha saxes don't publish their serial numbers online. So the most practical way to get an accurate date is to contact Yamaha. Some years back when they still had a factory in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in my neck of the woods, I called them up and had a serial number date discussion. One of the things they told me was that Yamaha starts serial numbers from scratch with each model number. YTS-23 has been around a long time and your serial number is pretty low. Based on that information, my best guess is that your horn was produced some time in the 1970's. Does it have the 'purple logo' that was painted on?
![]() I think they did some silverplated saxes. Most brands wants some plated horns when they introduce a new model/sax. So I guess the silverplated YTS 61 were from thier early production. I helped a friend to get a YTS 61 the other year. And they are really good saxes. I wonder why Yamaha dropped the 61 and intruded the 62? The 61 model lasted for just c 10 years. The 62 is more allround but the 61 has more character. I use to play with some guys who are playing on YTS 61 and they sounds good and no problem at all with thier saxes. Just regular care and service. Some 61 players open up the keys to have a louder horn. On the other side they lose some key action. And the detachable bow is also something that is on the spot. But you can solder it! Today I rest my Martin tenors and I play a YTS 25! Good sax and easy to own. The problem for me is that I can't play my mouthpieces with wider tip openings on the YTS 25. Enjoy your YTS 61! I regret I helped my friend. I should kept the YTS 61 myself. After seeing how this thread and others i and many other people have posted in general have ended up (with pictures of cars and V.Beckham talk, seriously? ***?) i NOW know why i am feeling less inclined to post or even visit this forum, possilbly if at all again on here, and have now decided to back off posting anymore on this site. I do like joking around and banter as much as anyone and i am no drama queen but to me this just seems to lose track way too often when trying to post informative or questions in threads on this site and to me that just dilutes any informative credibility here. Adios amigos! Ian, my dear chap, in way of making amends for my outrageous interventions into your thread, if you'd care to let me know the serial number of the YTS-61 in question I shall be delighted to ask my dear friend Natasha at Yamaha UK to enquire of her Japanese colleagues whether this was a Silver Plated horn originally. Records are sometimes sketchy related to these earlier horns, so I'll also enquire whether the 61 was ever produced in SP. It seems strange to me that Greg's NZ retailer was offering SP Tenor AND Alto 61s at the same time? This suggests to me a Borodi-like outfit somewhere (NZ perhaps?) which is stripping and plating them for resale. Of course, if the finish is not original it may somewhat also strip the horn of its value to the purist Yamaha collector? I look forward to your furnishing the serial number in due course. Yours sincerely, David.
